At Makai Ocean Club, we’re honored to offer a one-of-a-kind ocean safety camp that blends education, adventure, and community. This isn’t your average day at the beach—Makai Ocean Safety Camp is a specialized, semi-private experience designed for kids ages 7.5 and up who want to build ocean confidence, beach awareness, and essential swim safety skills.

Think of it as a high-level introduction to everything Junior Lifeguards learn—perfect for those prepping for JG tryouts, seeking an alternative to traditional programs, or simply looking to level up their ocean readiness in a fun, empowering environment.

Each session is intentionally limited to small groups of 4–5 campers, booked together as a group, to ensure personalized coaching from our experienced and certified lifeguards. We bring the camp to your local beach—anywhere from Redondo Beach to Santa Monica—making it as convenient as it is impactful.

Our camp days are packed with movement and meaning: swimming, paddling, running, boogie boarding, body surfing, and a rotating lesson of the day covering topics like rip currents, beach safety, marine life, and proper ocean entry techniques. We also incorporate critical lifesaving skills like CPR and first aid. Campers 10 and older can even opt into an official American Red Cross CPR course, leaving with a certification in hand.

This is more than a summer camp—it’s a deep dive into leadership, fitness, teamwork, and ocean stewardship. By promoting growth in and out of the water, campers leave with lasting skills, stronger friendships, and a lifelong love for the ocean.

Who is the right fit for Makai Ocean Safety Camp? 

This program is best suited for kids 7.5 years and older who can swim a 50-yard freestyle and tread water comfortably. Whether they just missed the Junior Lifeguard age or time cutoffs, are looking for a more personalized alternative, or simply want to feel fully prepared and confident at the beach, this camp is their ideal starting point. 

Most campers who join us in the summer continue into Makai’s Junior Lifeguard Prep Program in the winter—where they go on to not only pass the JG swim test but thrive thanks to the foundation they built with us. With our small coach-to-camper ratio and instructors who are ocean pros themselves, every camper gains next-level skills and awareness.
